Translation (Spanish/English)
Requirements
Description
The Spanish/English translation concentration is designed to provide students with advanced training required for professional translation in both public and private sectors. Students will be prepared for the rigorous examinations required by national and international agencies, and training as an ancillary skill for professional fields, such as international business, public health, medicine and law, in accordance with guidelines recommended by the American Translators Association.
Requirements
- Extensive work experience using Spanish and English or demonstrated bilingual writing competence in English and Spanish is also required. Students should contact an academic advisor in SILC for more information.
- Students are expected to have taken prerequisite courses ENG 301 and SPA 412. However, ENG 301 and SPA 412 may be completed in the first semesters after admission to the program.
- Courses for this concentration area are not offered every semester, students must anticipate that the program may take at least two years to complete once admitted.
- Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours.
- A minimum of 6 upper-division hours must be taken in courses offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher. Pass/Fail courses cannot be used.

ENG 301 Writing for the Professions, L (3) (Prerequisite(s): ENG 102, 105, or 108 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only ENG 301 or ENG 302)
Translation Theory 3 Hours
SLC 401 / SPA 440 Translation Theory and Practice (3) (Required) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or SPA 316 or SPA 413 with C or better)
Applied Translation Courses 9 Hours
SLC 481 / SPA 441 Technical and Scientific Translation (3) (Prerequisites: SLC 401)
SLC 482 / SPA 442 Business and Financial Translation (3) (Prerequisites: SLC 401)
SLC 485 / SPA 443 Translation of Legal Texts (3) (Prerequisite(s): ASB 480 or SLC 201 or SPA 400)
OR
SLC 486 / SPA 444 Medical Translation (3) (Prerequisite(s): SLC 201 or SPA 400; Credit is allowed for only SLC 486 or SLC 494 (Medical Translation))
Internship 3 Hours
Note: Students must complete all required courses before enrolling for an internship. Students must complete 35 on-site internship hours to earn three credit hours in SLC 484.
