Description
The concentration in global health is an interdisciplinary program designed for students who seek a broad and flexible set of skills for understanding contemporary health challenges and thinking about how they might best be solved. "Global" is understood in the anthropological sense, meaning ways of understanding and addressing disease, health and well-being that can incorporate all cultures, places and time, and that can integrate knowledge of health's social, historical, biological and ecological dimensions.

Requirements

  • Student must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours for this concentration including 12 upper division hours.
  • A minimum of six upper division hours must be taken in courses offered in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • * Course prerequisite: SSH 100 or ASB 100 with a C or better.
  • ** Students must participate in a summer study abroad program: 6 hours minimum of a 3-week approved program to countries such as: Australia & Fiji, China, London, Guatemala, New Zealand, and more. Please go to: shesc.asu.edu/global for more information.

Introductory Core 3 hours

SSH/ASB 100 Introduction to Global Health (3) (this course is a prerequisite for most upper division courses in this concentration)

Evolutionary/Time Depth 3 hours
Choose course from the following:

SSH/ASB/HST 301 Global History of Health, SB & H (3)*

SSH/ASM 401 Health and Human Biology (4)* (Credit is allowed for only ASM or SSH 401)

ASM 345 Disease and Human Evolution (3) (Prerequisites: ASM 104, or BIO 100, or BIO 181 (or BIO 188), or BIO 182 (or BIO 187), with a D or better)

Poverty & Social Justice 3 hours
Choose course from the following:

SSH/ASB 370 Production, People and Environments, SB (3)*

SSH 400/ASB 410/WST 410 Poverty, Social Justice, and Global Health, (L or SB) & G (3)*

SSH/ASM/SOS 414 Urban and Environmental Health (3)* (Prerequisites: ASM 104; AML 100 or SSH 100 with C or better; Min 45 hours)

Culture, Society, & Health 3 hours
Choose course from the following:

SSH/ASB 300 Food and Culture, (L or SB) & C (3)

ASB 355 Traditional Medicine and Healing (3)*

SSH 404/ASB 462 Medical Anthropology: Culture and Health, SB & C (3)

Study Abroad Program 6 hours**
Choose course from the following:

ASB 443 Cross-Cultural Studies in Global Health (3-6)
