Requirements


Description
Students pursuing a concentration in Japanese gain an understanding of the language, literature and cultures of Japan. There are opportunities to partake in study abroad programs, which can serve to enhance a student's experience and education.

Requirements 

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours which includes 12 upper division hours for this concentration.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • Students must complete a minimum of 6 JPN/SLC upper division (300-400 level) hours offered by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
  • Course substitutions are allowed for heritage and advanced speakers of the language. Consult an advisor in the School of International Letters and Cultures.

Required Core - 9 credit hours

JPN 301 Third-Year Japanese I, G (3) (Prerequisite: JPN 202 with C or better)

JPN 302 Third-Year Japanese II, G (3) (Prerequisite: JPN 301 with C or better)

JPN 333 Japanese Civilization from the Ice Age to Last Thursday (3)

Electives - 9 credit hours (at least 3 credits must be upper division)
Notes: Students may use a maximum of 6 credits from the 200-level. Additionally, a maximum of 3 credit hours in SLC 421 can be applied.

JPN 309 Japanese Oral Communication I (3)

JPN 310 Japanese Oral Communication II (3)

JPN 311 Japanese Composition I, G (3)

JPN 394 Special Topics (3)

JPN 401 Reading Modern Japanese Texts I (L or HU) & G)) (3) (Prerequisite(s): JPN 302 with C or better; SLC 202 with C or better)

JPN 414 Introduction to Classical Japanese (3) (Prerequisite(s): JPN 302 with C or better)

JPN 415 Advanced Classical Japanese (3) (Prerequisite(s): JPN 414 with C or better)

JPN 445 Readings in Modern Japanese Letters and Culture (3) (Prerequisite(s): JPN 401 with C or better; SLC 202 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only JPN 445 or JPN 535)

JPN 485 Literary Translation: Theory and Practice (3) (Prerequisite(s): JPN 401 with C or better; SLC 421 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only JPN 485 or JPN 585)

JPN 492 Honors Directed Study or JPN 493: Honors Thesis (L) (3) *Honors students only

JPN 494 Special Topics (3)

JPN 499 Individualized Instruction (3)

SLC 421 Japanese Literature in Translation, (L or HU) & G (maximum 3 credits) Notes: A maximum of 3 credit hours of SLC 421 may be applied to the Japanese concentration.
