Description
Clinical Associate Professor David Burel is seeking undergraduate student researchers who are interested in researching the history of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). This opportunity is open to students with appropriate interests and skills and will be conducted in one of the following areas:
The SUV in film and media
In this project, students will examine films and media that feature SUVs, mainly in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Student researchers will explore how SUVs are presented in film and media to understand their roles and other notable elements of their inclusion. Students will organize SUV appearances into a reference sheet and report findings at the project’s conclusion. This opportunity may also appeal to students who have an interest in print or media.
SUVs (and trucks) in motorsports and off-roading
In this project, students will research offroad and rally motorsports, such as the Baja 1000. Student researchers will explore primary and secondary sources to survey popular and enthusiast coverage of these events, with an emphasis on identifying trends in brands and teams related to SUV manufacturers. Additionally, researchers may participate in an off-roading activity related to SUVs and enthusiast communities. The project will require students to identify and organize sources into a reference document and report findings at the project’s conclusion.
