Description
The history of science, ideas and innovation concentration focuses on how science and technology shape every facet of modern human life, but all too frequently, underlying histories and ideas go unexamined. The history of science, ideas and innovation concentration helps students understand how we got to this point (and helps them reflect on what the future might hold) by providing them with a grounding in the social and intellectual issues central to understanding the intertwined histories of science, technology and ideas from past to present..

 Requirements

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
  • Student must complete 6 upper division hours through the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • Students wishing to add the concentration in History must consult with an academic advisor in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts in order to create a cohesive and comprehensive program of study.

HST 280 History of Science, Ideas and Innovation (3) (required)

Elective Courses 15 credit hours required
6 hours Upper Division courses must be taken through the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts

HST 309 Exploration and Empire (3) (Prerequisite(s): C or better; minimum 30 hours)

HST 318 History of Engineering (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 45 hours)

HST 319 History of Aviation (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 45 hours; Credit is allowed for only HST 319 or HST 306 (Aviation History))

HST 345 Environmental History (3)

HST 380 Studies in History and Science (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours)

HST 381 Studies in History and Ideas (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): ENG 102, 105, or 108 with C or better; minimum 30 hours)

HST 382 Studies in the History of Innovation and Technology (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s):minimum 30 hours)

HST 482 Writing and the History of Science, Ideas, and Technology (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours)

Depending upon a student's undergraduate program of study, prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this concentration.
