Description
The concentration in public service and public policy is designed for students from across the university who have an interest in public service and public policy issues, such as students with other concentrations in, sociology, criminology, the arts, the sciences and business. Course work provides basic knowledge of the field and enriches the major with an applied policy focus. The concentration has a strong professional and applied focus, intended to enhance students' education and ability to seek jobs in the public sector.

The public service sector offers sustainable, exciting and fulfilling career options. With a concentration in public service and public policy, students use their knowledge of the public sector as a catalyst to change the world. By understanding the challenges that government faces and being well-versed in the development of multiple, useful and realistic solutions, they can contribute to the development of local, national and global communities.

Requirements

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • A minimum 12 credit hours must be taken in the School of Public Affairs at ASU.
  • * Students completing this BIS concentration are not required to complete all listed prerequisites, please consult with your advisor so that they may acquire the appropriate over-ride for this course[cdr1]

PAF 200 Public Service and Policy in the 21st Century (3)

PAF 300 Public Management and Administration (3)

PAF 340 Contemporary Policy Challenges (3) (Prerequisites: Minimum 30 hours)

Electives 9 Hours Required
Other related electives may be selected with approval from an advisor in the School of Public Affairs.
Choose elective courses from the following:

PAF 201 Economics and Public Policy, SB (3)

PAF 311 Leadership and Change, SB (3) (Prerequisites: Minimum 30 hours)

PAF 410 Building Leadership skills, SB (3) (Prerequisites: Minimum 30 hours; Credit is allowed for only PAF 410 or URB 410)

PAF 420 Public Leadership (3)

PAF 470 Topics in public economics and financial management (3) (Prerequisites: ECN 212 or PAF 201 with C or better)

PAF 471 Public Policy Analysis (3) (Prerequisites: PAF 301 and PAF 340 with C or better)

URB 300 Urban and Metropolitan Studies (3) (Credit is allowed for only URB 100 or 300)

URB 305 Urban Governance (3) (Credit is allowed for only URB 105 or 305)
