Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Description
The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) concentration consists of a coherent set of courses that are related to teaching English to speakers of other languages. This concentration is designed for students who are interested in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). It will also be a good preparation for students who want to later pursue graduate studies in the MTESL program at ASU or in a similar program at another institution. Note that this concentration does not certify students to teach in Arizona public schools (K-12). Interested students should approach the TESOL certificate coordinator, a faculty member supervising the program, to discuss whether they could complete the 18 credits of the program as well as decide on the electives they would like to take.

Requirements

• Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
• All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
• All courses must be ASU credit.
• Students wishing to add this concentration must consult with the TESOL certificate coordinator, a faculty member supervising the program, in order to create a cohesive and comprehensive program of study.

Note: ENG 404 Studies in Second Language Acquisition is a repeatable for credit course in specialized topics in second language teaching & learning; topics vary by semester and students are required to take one course in SLA theory, one course in TESOL methods and one additional course with a different topic.

Course substitutions may be used with approval of an academic advisor in the Department of English before enrollment.

Prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this certificate.
