Description

Where did language come from and how does it shape how we think and act? Explore the historical and cultural aspects of the English language and consider how you can apply this knowledge in a variety of settings.

Students who pursue the concentration in English with a focus in linguistics study the origins, structures and functions of language. The program provides students with knowledge and skills that enable them to improve their writing, enhance their ability to read and think analytically, and become critical consumers of media.

Program Requirements

  • The concentration in English with a focus in linguistics consists of 18 credit hours. 
  • A minimum of 12 upper-division credit hours are required, with at least six credit hours from courses offered by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Courses must be completed with a grade of "C" (2.00 on a scale of 4.00) or better to satisfy minor requirements.

ENG 213: Introduction to the Study of Language (3)

ENG 312: English in its Social Setting (L or HU or SB) (3)

ENG 314: Modern Grammar (3)

ENG 413: History of English Language (HU) (3)

 

Directed Electives (choose two) -- 6 credit hours

ENG 214: English Grammar and Usage (3)

ENG 313: Phonology and Morphology (3)

ENG 403: Semantics (3)

ENG 404: Studies in Second Language Acquisition (3)

ENG 414: Studies in Linguistics (3)

 

Prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this concentration.

ENG 404 and ENG 414 are variable topics courses and may be repeated with a different topic title for a total of 6 credit hours.
