Requirements
Description
The astronomy concentration is designed for students interested in developing a basic understanding of astronomy and astrophysics and analyzing issues through a scientific viewpoint.
Requirements
- Students must complete a minimum of 23 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
- All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
- 10 credit hours of upper division courses in physics and astronomy are chosen with approval of an Astronomy advisor.
- Prerequisites (not counted in concentration total hours):
- MAT 265 Calculus for Engineers I, MA (3) OR MAT 270 Calculus I with Analytical Geometry I, MA (4)
- MAT 266 Calculus for Engineers II, MA (3) OR MAT 271 Calculus with Analytical Geometry II, MA (4)
- MAT 267 Calculus for Engineers III, MA (3) OR MAT 272 Calculus with Analytical Geometry III, MA (4)
Astronomy Core - 6 credit hours
AST 321 Introduction to Planetary and Stellar Astrophysics (3) (Prerequisite(s): AST 301 with C or better OR MAT 266 or 271 with C or better; PHY 121 and 122 (or PHY 150) with C or better)
AST 322 Introduction to Galactic and Extragalactic Astrophysics (3) (Prerequisite(s): AST 301 with C or better OR MAT 266 or 271 with C or better; PHY 121 and 122 (or PHY 150) with C or better)
Physics Core - 8 credit hours
Student must complete two semesters of physics. Choose between the course options in each group below:
Group 1:
PHY 150 Physics I, SQ (4) (Prerequisite(s): MAT 265 or 270 with C or better; Pre- or corequisite(s): MAT 266 or 271 with C or better if completed)
OR
PHY 121 University Physics I: Mechanics, SQ (3) *** and PHY 122 University Physics Laboratory I SQ (1) *** (Prerequisite(s): MAT 265 or 270 with C or better; Pre- or corequisite(s): MAT 266 or 271 with C or better if completed)
Group 2:
PHI 151 Physics II, SQ (4) (Prerequisite(s): MAT 266 or 271 with C or better; PHY 150 or PHY 121 and PHY 122 with C or better; Pre- or corequisite(s): MAT 267 or 272 with C or better if completed)
OR
PHY 131 University Physics II: Electricity and Magnetism, SQ (3) **** AND PHY 132 University Physics Laboratory II SQ (1) **** (Prerequisite(s): MAT 266 or 271 with C or better; PHY 121 with C or better; Pre- or corequisite(s): MAT 267 or 272 with C or better if completed)
OR
PHY 252 Physics III, SQ (4) (Prerequisite(s): PHY 151 or PHY 131 and 132 with C or better)
Electives - 9 credit hours of Upper Division Required
