Requirements


Description
The concentration in recreational therapy exposes students to the field of therapeutic recreation. Students develop knowledge to assess individuals, develop service plans, implement therapeutic interventions, and evaluate and document outcomes of care, supporting the wellness of their communities through therapeutic recreation.

Completion of the concentration provides students with a portion of the requirements needed for eligibility to take the national certification exam through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification: nctrc.org/about-certification/ctrs-the-qualified-provider/.

Requirements

  • A total of 18 credit hours must be completed to finish the concentration area, including 12 upper division hours.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • For students seeking the national credential in therapeutic recreation through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification https://nctrc.org/, select courses PRM 406, 413, 440, 450 or 455.

RTH 364 Foundations of Recreation Therapy (3)

Electives (choose 5 courses) -- 15 credit hours

Students interested in advancing knowledge in the field of therapeutic recreation and do not intend to seek eligibility for credentialing through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation, pick 5 courses between elective classes and other elective classes. Students seeking the national credentialing through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (NCTRC), select five from Recreation Therapy elective list. (15)

IDS Core Course Information

All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 9 credit-hour core and 9 credit hours of context/application courses.

Required Courses (9 credit hours):

  • IDS 201 Intellectual Fusion (recommended for freshman/sophomore students)
    • Prerequisites: None

          OR

  • IDS 301 Becoming Interdisciplinary (3) (recommended for transfer students and/or students declaring IDS in their junior or senior year)
    • Prerequisites: Interdisciplinary Studies major
       
  • IDS 302 Integration Skills (3)
    • Prerequisite(s): Interdisciplinary Studies major; IDS 201 or 301 with C or better
  • IDS 401 Integration: Experiential Learning (3) (requires application)
    • Prerequisites: IDS 201 or 301 with C or better; IDS 302 with C or better; minimum 2.00 GPA; minimum of two courses completed in each concentration area
