Description
Complement your degree with a concentration that broadens your understanding of the functions behind human communication.
The concentration in speech and hearing science is an academic program with emphasis on normal aspects of speech, language and hearing. The focus is on how motor, cognitive and sensory systems interact with and influence hearing, speech and language in children and adults.
Requirements
- Students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
- All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
- A minimum 6 upper division hours must be taken in courses offered by the Department of Speech and Hearing Science.
- Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an advisor from the Department of Speech and Hearing Science.
Core 15 Hours
SHS 205 Exploring Communication Disorders in Children and Adults (Prerequisite(s): minimum 45 hours)
SHS 250 Introduction to Phonetics
SHS 310 Anatomical and Physiological Bases of Speech (Prerequisite(s): BIO 160 or 201 with C or better; SHS 250 with C or better)
SHS 311 Physical and Physiological Bases of Hearing (Prerequisite(s): PHY 101 with C or better OR PHY 111 and 113 with C or better)
SHS 367 Language Science OR SHS 375 Speech Science (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours)
Electives 9 Hours Required - Students interested in pursuing the SLPA certificate should take SHS 402, 465, and 470
Choose elective courses from the following:
SHS 401 Introduction to Audiology (Prerequisite(s): SHS 311 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only SHS 401 or SHS 501)
SHS 402 Modifying Communicative Behavior (Pre- or corequisite(s): SHS 470, 485, or 565 with C or better if completed)
SHS 465 Speech and Language Acquisition (Prerequisite(s): SHS 250 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only SHS 465 or SHS 565)
SHS 470 Developmental Speech and Language Disorders (Prerequisite(s): SHS 465 with C or better)
SHS 485 Acquired Speech and Language Disorders (Prerequisite(s): SHS 310 with C or better; SHS 367 with C or better)
SHS 496 Aural Rehabilitation (Prerequisite(s): SHS 311 with C or better; SHS 375 with C or better; SHS 401 with C or better)
IDS Core Course Information
All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 9 credit-hour core and 9 credit hours of context/application courses.

- IDS 201 Intellectual Fusion (recommended for freshman/sophomore students)

- IDS 301 Becoming Interdisciplinary (3) (recommended for transfer students and/or students declaring IDS in their junior or senior year)
