Description
Study the social, historical and intellectual impacts of science, innovation and technology on our world. This is great preparation for advanced work in humanities or in fields bridging writing and technology.
Science and technology shape every facet of modern human life, but all too frequently the underlying histories and ideas go unexamined. The concentration in the history of science, technology and innovation helps students understand how society reached its present state and helps them reflect on what the future might hold by providing a foundation in the social and intellectual issues central to understanding the intertwined histories of science, technology and ideas.
Requirements
- Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
- Student must complete 6 upper division hours through the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts.
- All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
- Students wishing to add the concentration in History must consult with an academic advisor in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts in order to create a cohesive and comprehensive program of study.

HST 280 History of Science, Ideas and Innovation (3) (required)

HST 309 Exploration and Empire (3) (Prerequisite(s): C or better; minimum 30 hours)
HST 318 History of Engineering (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 45 hours)
HST 319 History of Aviation (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 45 hours; Credit is allowed for only HST 319 or HST 306 (Aviation History))
HST 345 Environmental History (3)
HST 380 Studies in History and Science (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours)
HST 381 Studies in History and Ideas (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): ENG 102, 105, or 108 with C or better; minimum 30 hours)
HST 382 Studies in the History of Innovation and Technology (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s):minimum 30 hours)
HST 482 Writing and the History of Science, Ideas, and Technology (repeatable when topics vary) (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours)
- Depending upon a student's undergraduate program of study, prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this concentration.
IDS Core Course Information
All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 9 credit-hour core and 9 credit hours of context/application courses.
Required Courses (9 credit hours):
- IDS 201 Intellectual Fusion (recommended for freshman/sophomore students)
- Prerequisites: None
OR
- IDS 301 Becoming Interdisciplinary (3) (recommended for transfer students and/or students declaring IDS in their junior or senior year)
- Prerequisites: Interdisciplinary Studies major
- Prerequisites: Interdisciplinary Studies major
- IDS 302 Integration Skills (3)
- Prerequisite(s): Interdisciplinary Studies major; IDS 201 or 301 with C or better
- IDS 401 Integration: Experiential Learning (3) (requires application)
- Prerequisites: IDS 201 or 301 with C or better; IDS 302 with C or better; minimum 2.00 GPA; minimum of two courses completed in each concentration area
- Prerequisites: IDS 201 or 301 with C or better; IDS 302 with C or better; minimum 2.00 GPA; minimum of two courses completed in each concentration area
