Asian Studies

 Description

The Asian studies concentration is offered through the Center for Asian Research. It demonstrates knowledge of an Asian language as well as general knowledge of Asian history, art, culture, and society. The concentration provides students with official transcript recognition of specialization in Asian Studies.

Requirements 

• Students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours including 15 of upper division hours for this concentration.
• 15 semester hours of upper-division area studies course work in at least 3 discipline areas outside of languages and literature courses (such as anthropology, art, geography, history, political science, and religious studies) is required.
• All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
• 9 additional hours may be some combination of lower- and/or upper-division courses.  HST/REL 111 Introduction to Asia, HU, H, G (3) is recommended but not required. 6 hours may be satisfied with language and literature courses limited to 321 and above. • Students must demonstrate proficiency in an Asian language at the intermediate level. The language requirement can be satisfied by completing the 201 and 202 sequence, one year of study abroad at the intermediate level, or satisfactory placement on a proficiency exam. Asian languages include: Chinese; Hindu/Urdu; Indonesian; Japanese; Korean; Thai; Vietnamese.
• A minimum of 6 upper division hours must be taken in courses offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Language

Proficiency through the intermediate level required. Languages include Chinese, Hindi/Urdu, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese. See Asian Studies advisor for more information.

Area Studies: 15 upper division hours (300, 400 or 500 level courses). Courses must be from at least 4 different disciplines and none of the courses may be from the School of International Letters and Cultures (no courses from the following prefixes: CHI, HIN, IDN, JPN, KOR, THA, VTN or SLC.)
