Description
Explore how social services are delivered in a variety of settings, and enhance your ability to work in human service settings.

The concentration in social welfare prepares students for social welfare work and other professional careers where a fundamental knowledge of human relations is required. The concentration enhances and broadens the ability of students to analyze complex family, individual, and societal problems in the context of societal values, cultural diversity, and other social and economic variables. The concentration also contributes to students' understanding of society and social behavior, encourages critical thinking, and helps develop communication skills.

Requirements

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours (internship or independent study not applicable) including 12 of upper division hours from the approved list for this concentration.
  • Minimum of 12 hours of social work courses must be completed at ASU.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher, no pass/fail credit.
  • Complete SWU 171 as the prerequisite for all upper division SWU courses.
  • Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Students must be at a sophomore standing to take 300 or 400 level courses.
  • Students are required to meet with a Social Welfare Advisor prior to registration, call 602-496-0800 to set up an appointment.

SWU 171 Introduction to Social Work (3) (Required)

SWU 291 Social Service Delivery Systems (3) (Required) (Prerequisites: PSY 100, PSY 101, SOC 101 or SOC 301; Pre/Co-requisites: SWU 171 with a C or better if completed)

SWU 332 Social Policy and Advocacy (3) (Prerequisite(s): Community Advocacy and Social Policy major or Public Service and Public Policy major; POS 110 or POS 310 or SWU 182)

OR 

SWU 432 Social Policy & Services (3) (Prerequisites for SWU 432 are waived for students enrolled in this concentration)

Cultural Diversity in the United States Course
Select one course from the following - 3 credit hours

SWU 374 Diversity and Oppression in Social Work Context (3) ((Pre- or corequisite(s): Community Advocacy and Social Policy BA major OR SWU 310 with C or better if completed OR SWU 311 with C or better if completed; SWU 312 with C or better if completed))

SWU 456 Immigrants and Refugees (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum junior standing; Credit is allowed for only SWU 456 or SWU 498 (Immigrants & Refugees) or SWG 556)

SWU 457 Southwest Borderlands Immigration Issues (3) (Pre-requisite: Credit is allowed for only SWG 557 or SWU 457)

SWU 459 Spirituality and the Helping Professions (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum junior standing; Credit is allowed for only SWU 459 or SWU 494 (Spirituality and the Helping Professions) or SWU 498 (Spirituality & Helping Profession) or SWG 559)

SWU 461 Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Issues (Prerequisite(s): minimum junior standing; Credit is allowed for only SWU 461 or SWU 498 (Lesbian/Gay Issues) or SWG 561)
