Compassion and Equity in Literacy Classrooms: ASU First-Year Writing

This workshop led by writing assessment and race scholar Asao B. Inoue will identify problems with the white language we tend to teach as standards and outcomes in undergraduate first-year writing courses.

Inoue will discuss "Problematizing Grading and the White Habitus of the Writing Classroom" from his book "Labor-Based Grading Contracts: Building Equity and Inclusion in the Compassionate Writing Classroom." He will teach participants what a labor-based grading contract classroom affords and why it’s important to do if one wishes to engage in antiracist classroom writing assessment practices. His discussion will be moderated by Associate Director of CISA Academic Advising Services Gerry West and will be followed by a Q&A.

Registrants are asked to review "Problematizing Grading and the White Habitus of the Writing Classroom" before the event begins.

Speaker Bios

Asao B. Inoue is professor of Rhetoric and Composition in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University. His research focuses on antiracist and social justice theory and practices in writing assessments. He is the 2019 Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and has been a past member of the CCCC Executive Committee, and the Executive Board of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.

Among his many articles and chapters on writing assessment, race and racism, his article, “Theorizing Failure in U.S. Writing Assessments” in Research in the Teaching of English, won the 2014 CWPA Outstanding Scholarship Award. His co-edited collection, "Race and Writing Assessment" (2012), won the 2014 NCTE/CCCC Outstanding Book Award for an edited collection. His book, "Antiracist Writing Assessment Ecologies: Teaching and Assessing for a Socially Just Future" (2015) won the 2017 NCTE/CCCC Outstanding Book Award for a monograph and the 2015 CWPA Outstanding Book Award. He also has published a co-edited collection, Writing Assessment, Social Justice, and The Advancement of Opportunity (2018), and a book, "Labor-Based Grading Contracts: Building Equity and Inclusion in the Compassionate Writing Classroom" (2019).

Gerry West is a native son of Ohio, and Social Justice Warrior to help underserved student populations. He has been working with and in high schools and community colleges closely since 2015 when he took over the Recruitment, Outreach and Engagement unit within CISA. West has been at ASU for 15 years this July and continues with enthusiasm in his endeavor to help promote our college and faculty to the community we serve as a whole.

West is the father of two children, Peyton and Alex, and has been married for 12 years to his lovely wife Kaia. He is a former college basketball player and current high school boys’ varsity coach. In his current role as Associate Director he oversees all recruitment, outreach, engagement and events related to CISA across all campus platforms and online.
