Classical Studies (Greek)

Description
The Greek classical studies concentration offers students a wide variety of opportunities to study the language, literature and culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. This concentration is ideal for those students interested in pursuing a classical education in conjunction with another concentration.

Requirements

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours for this concentration.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • Five semesters of ancient Greek (17 credit hours; GRK 301 and 302 may be repeated for credit) is required.
  • A minimum of 6 upper division hours must be taken with courses offered in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Language 6-10 credit hours

GRK 101 Elementary Ancient Greek (5)

GRK 201 Intermediate Ancient Greek (5) (Prerequisites: GRK 101 with a grade of C or better)

GRK 301 Ancient Greek Literature I, HU (3) (Prerequisites: GRK 201 with a grade of C or better) (Note: GRK 301 must be taken at least once and possibly twice if needed to reach 5 semesters of credit. May also be repeated to count toward the Classical Studies Electives Requirement.)

GRK 302 Ancient Greek Literature II, HU (3) (Prerequisites: GRK 301 with a grade of C or better) (Note: GRK 302 must be taken at least once and possibly twice if needed to reach 5 semesters of credit. May also be repeated to count toward the Classical Studies Electives Requirement.)

Electives - 12 credit hours

SLC/GRK 352 The Rise and Fall of Ancient Athens, HU & H (3) (Prerequisite(s): ENG 102, 105, or 108 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only GRK 352 or GRK 394 (Glory that was Greece) or LAT 394 (Glory that was Greece) or SLC 352 or SLC 394 (Glory that was Greece))

SLC 345 Ancient Greece I: Bronze Age through the Peloponnesian War (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours; Credit is allowed for only GRK 347 or HST 347 or SLC 345)

SLC 346 Ancient Greece II: Late Classical and Hellenistic Period (SB & H) (3) (Prerequisite(s): minimum 30 hours; Credit is allowed for only GRK 346 or HST 346 or SLC 346)

IDS Core Course Information

All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 9 credit-hour core and 9 credit hours of context/application courses.

Required Courses (9 credit hours):

  • IDS 201 Intellectual Fusion (recommended for freshman/sophomore students)
    • Prerequisites: None

OR

  • IDS 301 Becoming Interdisciplinary (3) (recommended for transfer students and/or students declaring IDS in their junior or senior year)
    • Prerequisites: Interdisciplinary Studies major

  • IDS 302 Integration Skills (3)
    • Prerequisite(s): Interdisciplinary Studies major; IDS 201 or 301 with C or better
  • IDS 401 Integration: Experiential Learning (3) (requires application)
    • Prerequisites: IDS 201 or 301 with C or better; IDS 302 with C or better; minimum 2.00 GPA; minimum of two courses completed in each concentration area

Context courses (6 credit hours)
