Requirements


Description
Students pursuing a concentration in Spanish gain an understanding of the language, literature, and cultures of Spanish speaking peoples and regions. There are opportunities to partake in study abroad programs, which can serve to enhance a student's experience and education.

Requirements

  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 upper division credit hours for this concentration.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher.
  • Pass/Fail courses cannot be used for this BIS emphasis area.
  • A minimum of 6 upper division hours must be taken in courses offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Consult a School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) academic advisor regarding placement into a language course.
  • SPA 311 & SPA 312 do not count towards the BIS emphasis area in any catalog year.
  • Course substitutions are allowed for heritage and advanced speakers of the language. See an advisor in the SILC for more information.
  • SPA 325 is a pre-requisite for SPA 425, 426, 427, 428, 464, and other literature courses.
  • Consult a SILC academic advisor regarding the applicability of POR 400 level culture or literature courses towards concentration requirements.
  • Consult a SILC academic advisor regarding the substitution of SPA 413 in place of SPA 412.

Core 12 Hours

SPA 202 Intermediate Spanish, G (4) OR SPA 204 Intermediate Spanish for Bilinguals, G (4) OR SPA 210 Intensive Spanich II, G (6-8)

SPA 313 Spanish Conversation and Composition, G (3) OR SPA 315 Spanish Conversation and Composition for Bilinguals (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 202 with C or better; May not enroll in SPA 313 if credit received in SPA 314, 315, 316, 325 or 412)

SPA 314 Spanish Conversation and Composition, G (3) OR SPA 316 Spanish Conversation and Composition for Bilinguals (3) (Prerequisite(s): SPA 313 or 315 with C or better; Students may not enroll in SPA 314 if they have received a C or better in SPA 412)

SPA 412 Advanced Conversation and Composition, G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or SPA 316 or SPA 413 with C or better)

In addition to 12 credit hours in required courses, students complete nine credit hours from one of three tracks provided to permit specialization in ways beneficial to their personal or academic goals:

Spanish Language Studies Track

SPA 413 Advanced Spanish Grammar, G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314, 316 or 412 with C or better)  (Required) 

AND

Choose one of the following courses:

SPA 400 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (3) (Pre/co-requisite: SPA 412 or 413)

SPA 471 Civilization of the Spanish Southwest, L or HU, C (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or 316)

SPA 472 Spanish-American Civilization, HU, H, G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or 316)

SPA 473 Spanish Civilization, HU or SB, G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or 316)

Choose one of the following courses:

SPA 394 ST: Hispanidades (3) (see an SILC advisor)

SPA upper division study abroad course (3) (see an SILC advisor)

SPA 484 Internship (3) (see an SILC advisor)

 

Spanish Literacy and Cultural Studies Track

SPA 325 Introduction to Hispanic Literature, HU (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 313, 314, 315, 316, 412, or SPA 413 with C or better) (Required)

Choose one of the following courses:

SPA 425 Spanish Literature (to 1700), HU (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 325)

SPA 426 Spanish Literature (from 1700), HU (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 325)

SPA 427 Spanish American Literature (to 1880), L (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 325)

SPA 428 Spanish American Literature (from 1880), L & G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 325)

SPA 429 

SPA 464 Mexican American Literature (3), (HU or SB) & C (Prerequisites: SPA 325 with D or better)

SPA 471 Civilization of the Spanish Southwest, (L or HU) or C (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314, or 316, with D or better)

SPA 472 Spanish American Civilization, HU & H & G (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 314, or 316, with D or better)

SPA 400 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (3) (Required)

 AND

 Choose two of the following courses:

SPA 417 Spanish Phonetics & Phonology, (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 412 or 413 with C or better)

SPA 418 Spanish Syntax, (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 412 or 413 with C or better)

SPA 419 Language Variation in Spanish (3) (Pre/corequisite(s): SPA 417 and 418 with C or better if completed; Credit is allowed for only SPA 419 or SPA 494 (Language Variations of Spanish))

SPA 420 Spanish Applied Linguistics, L (3) (Prerequisites: SLC 201 or SPA 400 with C or better; SPA 413)

SPA 421 Spanish in the Southwest, L or SB, C (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 412 with C or better)
