Wildlife Management

The wildlife management concentration is designed for students at interested in biology, conservation, sustainability and management of natural resources. The concentration provides students with professional credentials to qualify for many positions offered by the state (e.g. Arizona Game and Fish Department) and federal agencies (e.g., US Forest Service, US Geological Survey, US Bureau of Land Management). The concentration will provide students with application-based and hands-on experience in the field and allow them to engage with wildlife professionals. Students completing this concentration may give a hiring edge to those in the growing field of environmental careers for agencies and non-government organizations.


  • Students must complete a minimum of 22 credit hours including 12 upper division hours for this concentration.
  • At least 9 hours must be upper-division courses offered by the Applied Biological Sciences program and selected with the approval of an advisor.
  • Students are required to complete BIO 181 and BIO 182 OR BIO 281 and BIO 282 prior to enrollment in concentration courses.

ABS 274 Introduction to Wildlife Management (4) (Prerequisite: BIO 182 (or BIO 187))
ABS 376 Wildlife Ecology (3) (Pre/Co-requisites: ABS 274; ABS 370)
ABS 475 Habitat Management for Small Wildlife (3) (Prerequisite: ABS 376)
ABS 476 Big Game Habitat Management (3) (Prerequisites: Minimum junior standing)

Elective certificate courses (9 credit hours; choose three courses)

ABS 377 International Wildlife Conservation (3)
ABS 380 Restoration and Wildlife Plants (3) (Prerequisite: ABS 207) 
ABS 470 Life History of Mammals (3) (Prerequisite: ABS 355)
ABS 472 Applied Herpetology (3) (Prerequisite: ABS 355 or BIO 370; Credit is allowed for only ABS 472 or 498 (Applied Herpetology))

All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 12 credit hour core.

BIS 301, BIS 302 and BIS 402 courses require:

  • A meeting with your academic advisor to:
    Ensure both of your concentration areas have been declared
    Are working towards completing (or have completed) 1-2 courses in each declared concentration

  • One course meeting general studies MA requirement
  • ENG 102 or ENG 105 or ENG 108 or First Year Composition Completed
  • Minimum 2.00 GPA
