Description
The Spanish/English translation concentration is designed to provide students with advanced training required for professional translation in both public and private sectors. Students will be prepared for the rigorous examinations required by national and international agencies, and training as an ancillary skill for professional fields, such as international business, public health, medicine and law, in accordance with guidelines recommended by the American Translators Association.

Requirements

  • Admission to this BIS concentration program is required prior to registration for core courses (BIS or SPA courses). As part of the admission process, students must also take an entrance exam (offered in December and May), which requires prerequisite course work.   • Courses for this concentration area are not offered every semester, students must anticipate that the program may take at least two years to complete once admitted.
  • Students must complete a minimum of 20 credit hours including 12 of upper division hours.
  • A minimum of 6 upper-division hours must be taken in courses offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher. Pass/Fail courses cannot be used.
  • SPA 412 and/or ENG 301 can be waived if the student can present proof of having taken an equivalent course at another institution, or having had substantial formal education in Spanish and/or English.
  • Course SLC 485 listed on the DARS report is no longer available; choose from the courses listed in the Translation area above.
  • SLC 494 Legal Translation and SLC 494 Medical Translation are in the process of being regularized to replace SLC 483.

SPA 400 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (3) (Prerequisites: SPA 413 with a D or better, or be co-enrolled in SPA 413)

SLC 201 Introduction to Linguistics, HU or SB (3)

SLC 401 Translation Theory and Practice (3) (Required) (Prerequisites: SPA 314 or SPA 316 or SPA 413 with C or better)

SLC 482 Business and Financial Translation (3) (Prerequisites: SLC 401)

SLC 494 Legal Translation (3)
